Expedition Updates
January 5, 1999
Happy New Year! The team has checked in from a village in Chile, they are off the icecap and in good health and spirits. There were some technical difficulties with the Iridium phone making communication problematic. The team ultimately established nine camps and weathered multiple storm systems. They made it back to base camp on New Year's Eve.
The team will be flying back home on schedule.
December 11, 1998
The weather continues to slow the team down. They are skirting along the edge of the icecap and have moved all supplies up to camp 3. The team is doing well in spite of the rain, mud and ice. They plan to make camp 4 tomorrow which will be on the ice cap itself.
December 10, 1998
Team has been hampered by rain and wind, they report that they are wet. There have some route finding problems including some difficult crevasses. They are proceeding to camp 3 and should be there tomorrow on the plateau or main part of the ice cap. The team has been involved in moving around 700 pounds of supplies from camp to camp.
December 7, 1998
The battery problem has been resolved, the team will continue to call in updates as planned. Weather conditions - raining all day. The team's progress slow due to steep terrain. Camp 2 has been established and the team has carried two loads of supplies from Base Camp to Camp 2. The rest of the supplies will be moved from Base Camp tomorrow to Camp 2. After this is accomplished the team will move onto the ice cap. It is expected that once on the ice cap the team's progress will accelerate.
December 5, 1998
Currently the team has landed. The weather is good and the team is doing fine. There is a problem with the battery charger for the Iridium phone. The team is working on a solution. Unfortunately the next update could be in two weeks. Be sure to check the main map for the team's progress.
December 1, 1998
Team checked in by Iridium phone from Coyhaique and is proceeding to Tortel. They will be on the ice cap on Friday December 4. Team reports that they are all fine and doing well.
November 30, 1998
Team reports: Arrived in Santiago, went to Vina del mar testing equipment today and all worked well.
Team checked in at the airport. The journey begins...
